A Symposium on Xu Zhimo, a Chinese Poet Extraordinaire
Date: Saturday, September 27, 2003; 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm.
Place: Hunter College, N510

One of the most distinguished poets of the 20th century
China, Xu Zhimo, or Hsu Chi-muo, (1897-1931) was educated at
Beijing University in China and at Columbia University in
U.S. and Cambridge University in England. Equally at home
writing in Chinese and in English, Xu was a literary herald
in blending the best of the Chinese and the Anglo-American
literatures. Xu Zhimo has remained a true legend for the
high romanticism and lyricism as how they are reflected in
his poetry and poetic essays, his Byronic air and his
affairs of the heart, and his tragic death at the young age
of 34. For the first time outside of China, the Learned (Renwen)
Society of China Institute is presenting a
5-hour symposium on the life and works of Xu Zhimo, the
tumultuous years of social and cultural changes in the
1920's in China -- years in which Xu emerged as a major
literary force, and his impact on later poets and writers in
general. Prominent scholars on Xu Zhimo and modern Chinese
literature will be invited to speak at this rare literary
event. Some of Xu Zhimo's descendants will be in attendance.
The symposium will be entirely in Chinese.
